What Is A Parasite Cleanse?

A parasite cleanse is a program designed to detoxify the body by eliminating harmful parasites from the digestive tract and other organs. In this article I will share how our family does routine cleanses and what you can expect.

1. What are parasites and where do they live

  • Parasites, are organisms that live in or on a host organism, deriving nutrients from the host.
  • Although there are a few different families of parasites we are going to be talking specifically about endoparasites. The most common endoparasites live inside the digestive track of its mammal host.
  • How are parasites spread? Ingesting water or food containing parasite eggs. Some parasites can live in soil or on other surfaces and penetrate through the skin, Physical contact with an infected person or animal.

Parasites are a part of life, especially if you live on a homestead or even if you have only a few animals like a house cat or dog. To live in denial of the existence of parasites in our lives simply because we can’t see them is like denying that mosquitos exist (also a type of parasites).

I grew up on a farm where animals and humans alike routinely got treated for parasites and was shocked when I learned, after leaving the old order Mennonite culture and joining modern American culture, that not only do very few people treat their families for parasites (even though they treat their animals) but even fewer people want to talk about parasites or admit that they or their children might have parasites.

Think about it this way, your house pet has parasites, because no mammals are completely free of parasites, the pet licks you or your baby on the face and those parasite or eggs now have a new host to derive nutrients from.

Or, your pet licks his feet, then walks on the floor, your family and you now walk on the same floor barefoot, and those parasites have found a new host.

A child with parasite overload goes to the bathroom and doesn’t wash their hands, touches the doorknob. You innocently come along and touch that same doorknob and are now host to a new family of parasites.

On the Homestead there are even more opportunities for parasites and their eggs to be spread.
But before we spiral with fear and start sanitizing everything (not that sanitizers kill parasites) let’s take a moment to acknowledge how amazing the human body is! Praise God!!

While all mammals are host to parasites, this doesn’t mean that all mammals are sick with parasites.

When parasites enter a healthy body, they are often deactivated by an amazing immune system and a healthy gut microbiome before they ever become a problem. It is only when there is a parasite overload that a body will start showing symptoms. These symptoms show up because the parasites are consuming too many of the nutrients and the body is stressed from trying to expel the parasites.

2.What are symptoms of parasite overload? (According to Manhattan Gastroenterology)

  • Digestive Issues: Persistent diarrhea, constipation, gas, bloating, nausea, and vomiting.
  • Fatigue and Malnutrition: Chronic exhaustion, apathy, depression, and inability to gain weight, often due to nutrient depletion.
  • Skin and Immune Reactions: Rashes, hives, eczema, or skin irritation, often caused by increased IgE (immunoglobin E) production. igE production is the body’s natural immune response to parasites.
  • Anal/Genital Itching: Particularly intense at night, a common sign of pinworm infection.
  • Neurological/Sleep Disturbances: Insomnia, waking up between 2 a.m. and 3 a.m., anxiety, or irritability.
  • Physical Aches: Muscle and joint pain.
  • Bruxism: Teeth grinding during sleeping.

The human body knows exactly what to do with any parasites that escape the immune response and set up shop in the digestive track, expel them! The problem arises largely from the standard American diet, high in sugar (parasite’s favorite) and processed food, which causes a lot of inflammation. In the digestive tract this inflammation looks like more places for parasites to set up shop and hide from the body’s natural defenses. They borrow deep inside, multiplying and consuming nutrients.

So as with anything your best defense against parasites is not to live in fear of them (because fear hinders your health more than parasites do) but to eat a healthy, highly nutritious diet that supports the immune system and other natural functions, and do a gentle, routine parasite cleanse to help prevent a parasite overload. Especially if you have animals and young children!

3. How an herbal parasite cleanse works:

  • Bitter anti-parasitic herbs like: Green black walnut hull, wormwood, clove, ginger root, fennel seed, olive leaf, peppermint oil are made into a tincture and added to the diet.
  • This tincture is taken before every meal for 5-7 days. Starting 1-2 days before a full moon (because parasites are more active during full moon the cleanse is most effective when done during full moon) These bitter herbs create an unfriendly environment in the lining of the digestive track, causing the parasites to leave the lining and become exposed to the body’s natural defenses. The body flushes out the intruders.

4. How our family does a parasite cleanse:

  • Our family cleanses for two full moons in a row, the second cleanse to get any parasites that may have hatched from eggs that were missed the month before.
  • The tinctures are normally very bitter, not pleasant to take, we put the dose into an ounce or two of grape juice for those who are sensitive to the bitterness.
  • We eat our normal, healthy diet during the cleanse.
  • We have never taken a ‘Binder’ with our herbal cleanses; the body knows how to expel them.
  • We try our best to treat the entire family at the same time to help manage the amount of parasites our immune systems have to deal with

5. What to expect when doing an herbal parasite cleanse

  • Only in an extreme overload cases (adoption) have we seen alarming things in a BM.
  • When parasite cleanses are done as routine body maintenance you may simply see some excess mucus in BM during the cleanse.
  • Just because you’re not seeing earthworm type parasites in the toilet doesn’t mean the cleanse isn’t working. Many parasites are microscopic, and you won’t ever see them with the bare eye.
  • Herbal parasite cleanses are normally gentle and don’t cause upset stomach or digestive upset.

There are many trustworthy herbal shops on the internet in modern day America. I am sharing the cleanse that my family has had success with for over 10 years now. I am not affiliated with this company in any way.

Para-rid from Mountain Meadow Herbs

Normally the herbal cleanse will come with dosage and instructions for the tincture you purchased. Sometimes the instructions are on the website listing that you purchased the tincture from. Instructions vary from company to company and from formula to formula so be sure to follow the instructions for the specific product that you are using.

  1. thank you for this. We used to always do a paragone cleanse 2 times a yr then the product got discontinued. I just ordered 2 jars so the hubby and i can get back to it. Thank you for your instructions as well. Having tons of inoor and outdoor animals, its very important to do this. Have a blessed day.

  2. thank you for the information. i plan on incorporating it into my rountine. do you have one for pets? we have 2 indoor cats.

    1. We do this twice a year regardless if symptoms are visible or not since most times once you have symptoms your body has been struggling long before you were aware.

    1. We do it as routine maintenance 2x a year. It’s better to be proactive than to try and manage an overload.

  3. Thank you so much for your common sense to just say it. I’ve been trying to get people to remember that the possibility of having parasites should be common knowledge. It was common knowledge when my grandparents were raising their children. My grandma kept a bottle of worm pills in her kitchen windowsill for routine use. I asked my children’s pediatrician about what I should use to worm my children and he laughed at me and said “ we don’t do that anymore “. I wasn’t convinced but didn’t know what to do at that time. I have recently heard that food grade diatomaceous earth will eliminate parasites. Do you know if DE is enough to eliminate all types?

    1. I have heard that about DE. However it be more cautious with that because it has side effects and isn’t safe for breathing in. I choose the herbal remedies.

  4. I am so thankful that you are speaking up about this. My seven-year-old daughter had been suffering with vaginal and anal pain off and on for two years now. I finally demanded it a stool test and we found out that she had pin worms. We treated her and the whole family. It is a routine for us to do 2-3 times a year now.

  5. Thank you, RuthAnn for explaining this simply. I will be ordering today as I have most of the symptoms you described. I too am trying to stay off social media and appreciate this form of communication from you. 🙂

  6. Thank you so much for the information, I’ve been looking at several different cleanses and they all feel a bit overwhelming. How do you handle your kids getting a lunch dose while at school or do you just do breakfast and dinner doses for them?

    1. This is a good question. during the school year the children do, breakfast, 3pm snack and at bedtime.

  7. What are some of the side effects you’ve noticed from the cleanse – cramping, nausea, etc? I’m considering this for our family but it would be our first time to try anything like it. I wouldn’t want to make my kids sick or unwell, especially if they have an accident at school.

Such great points you’ve made in this post, thank you!

    1. Hello, We have never noticed any adverse affects from this cleanse. it includes herbs for soothing the digestive system.

  8. Thanks for this informative email! Like Karen who commented above, I am also staying off Instagram; mine is a 40-day social media fast. Your email was a welcome distraction from the temptation to “check in”.

  9. Excellent timing and answers all the questions I had wanted to ask you but knew you would be super busy and not see my message. I actually bought the cleanse last year but have made every excuse not to do it because of questions of the unknown.

  10. Excellent timing and answers all the questions I had wanted to ask you but knew you would be super busy and not see my message. I actually bought the cleanse last year but have made every excuse not to do it because of questions of the unknown.

  11. Thank you for the information. I’m going to give this a try, ordered today.
I’ve gotten off Instagram, was feeling a bit addictive to me. So, I was very happy to get your newsletter, Ruth Ann. Missing your wisdom and joy.
Sending love and well wishes to all the Zimmermans.

  12. I just had a baby and I’m breastfeeding. Is it possible to do a cleanse during this time? I have been wanting to do one for a while but I was pregnant. I’m really hoping I can do one now.

      1. Thanks, Ruthann. I am also nursing. I checked their website and it’s not clear which product to use. Would you be able to post the link? Many thanks!

  13. Thank you so much for sharing. I greatly appreciate you sharing your knowledge free of charge about many things. Don’t change a thing of what you are doing! Thank you for telling all of us what we need to do to keep your votes up on your videos. What do you think of ivermectin?

  14. Thank you, RuthAnn, for sharing how your family keeps parasites in check. I didn’t know that grinding one’s teeth could be a symptom of having parasites nor about doing the cleanse around the time of a full moon. That makes sense that certain phases of the moon would have an effect.

I do have some capsules that contain many of the same ingredients you mentioned that I have used for several days in a row, then use again two weeks later in case there were eggs which were not expelled and that have hatched. I get a whiff of the bitter from them, but my taste buds are spared from the bitterest part.

I’ve seen some tinctures but had no one say they used them, so I’ll keep an eye out for the brand you mentioned.

    Thanks again!

  15. Could you give me the information on where I could order this cleanse? Thank you Linda Kerber

  16. Hello Ruthann. I feel like my family needs to do this. I can’t find it on Amazon. Walmart has a 4 oz. bottle for $45. Does that sound like the right price? Thank You! I enjoy your channel & your family. You are an amazing Proverbs 31 woman! An inspiration. I have your book & really like it.
    Thank You,

  17. Thanks for the post. I had seen the original discussion on a YouTube video prior to it not being available anymore. Grateful to have your advice and wisdom in this area.

  18. Ruthann,
Thank you for this informative email. I’m 74 & have never thought about a parasite cleanse. Although I know we carry parasites.
Here’s a funny story from my youth.
When my mom would see any of us 3 kids scratching our bums she would “treat” all of us for worms. At bedtime she would put a piece of tape on the “area” to catch the worms. Why I don’t know. That wasn’t helping anything & we hated it. lol
