Garlic Salve

This recipe has the same effect as grandma’s onion poultices did. Both onions and garlic have been shown to have expectorant properties and when placed upon the skin, the properties are absorbed through the skin and can help the body to break up and expel coagulated mucus that accompanies respiratory viruses.
In addition, garlic contains organosulfur compounds like allium that have antiviral and antibacterial properties.

Ingredients

  • cup tallow or coconut oil
  • 2 tbs liquid oil olive oil or jojoba
  • 6-8 cloves peeled garlic

Instructions

  • Blend until smooth, I use my immersion blender
  • Apply to the bottoms of baby’s feet at every feeding at first sign of a cold.
  • Apply to the chest and back at every diaper change.

Notes

Garlic can be irritating to sensitive skin, if this is the case with your baby simply dilute the salve with more tallow or coconut oil. If irritation continues, use only on the bottoms of the feet.
We use this for adults and older children too. But its one of the only things that we use on babies that are not yet eating solids.
